Packing and Storage Tips

University Moving and Storage can take care of all the supplies, preparation and organization involved with your moving process, so that you can sit back and relax. However, here are a few simple tips from our professionals to help throughout the short-term storage process…

  • Supplies - If you are planning on packing your items yourself and having the movers come pick everything up for you, make sure to use high-quality packing materials. Strong boxes, bubble wrap, packing paper, and packing tape will go a long way to protect your items while they are in storage.
  • Preparation - There are many items that you cannot pack or put into storage right away. Take time to defrost your refrigerator and freezer, disassemble any furniture that you are able to, and always protect fragile items like plates and glasses. Also, make sure you know exactly how many items you are storing and to mark boxes that have fragile items in them. All of this preparation work will ensure that your items are handled properly and are in working order when you receive them back from storage.
  • Organization – Marking your boxes is an extremely vital step in the packing process. Make sure that items are packed safely, with other like items. You will not want to store electronics with your glasses or office supplies with IT equipment. Using a color-coded packing system is a great idea to stay organized, where each room is assigned a color and then write what items are in each box next to the colored sticker.

Always make sure to ask your moving company about storage options, just in case. Even if you do not think you will need storage solutions, it always good to know that the option is there, if needed.
