Our Local Moving Services Help Eliminate DIY Moving Mistakes & Injuries

At University Moving and Storage, we’ve provided comprehensive local moving services for years, helping thousands of folks have a safe and simple move. We know there’s no one right way to plan your move, and that’s why our move coordinators work with you to create a custom moving plan. If you’re planning to do some of your move yourself, we’re happy to partner with you for your next move. But we’ve also seen some mistakes in the past that we’d like to help our clients avoid.

  • Packing haphazardly, or not clearly labeling boxes. Lots of folks make the mistake of packing with whatever comes to hand, whether that’s a box, bin, or bag. And while you might think this helps keep the items in one room all together, it also results in uneven packing, meaning your items are not safe and secure during transit. When you use professional packing services, local moving companies will provide standardized boxes that can be clearly labeled, as well as packing supplies to make sure all of your possessions are safe during transit.
  • Not using enough packing material with fragile items. Especially in the kitchen, you’ll have lots of items that need to be packed individually and with layers of packing materials—otherwise they are sure to break when the box gets moved, stacked, or unpacked. Flat glass, ceramic, or otherwise delicate items should be wrapped individually in packing paper, cloth, or bubble wrap, and stacked vertically in a box that has additional padding at the bottom and top. For bowls and other round items, be sure to put more packing materials around the base of them and anywhere else there’s void space in the box.
  • Underestimating heavy or unwieldy items in your home. Fitness equipment, pianos, shelving units, bed frames, and other large pieces of furniture that don’t come apart require special planning and resources to be moved safely. Ask more than one person for assistance in moving these items, and be sure that whatever vehicle you are using can fit the piece before you move it. Always use caution when lifting heavy items. We recommend you also use dollies, braces, straps, and other tools while moving these items.
  • Strategize how to pack your vehicle. Be mindful of the weight, width, and height of furniture as you pack. You want to be sure that if your van, truck, or other vehicle has to make a sudden stop or sharp turn, none of your items will topple over or crush each other.

Our local moving services are happy to work with you no matter what your moving plan is, or how big of a move you’re planning. We offer comprehensive packing, moving, installation, assembly, unpacking, storage, and debris removal services.
