Tips from the Expert Packers and Movers at University Moving and Storage

University Moving and Storage is proud to help families and businesses make their next move in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and across the entire Midwest, and beyond. Even when your budget is slim or your timeline is tight, our move coordinators will work with you to make sure you have the help you need.

If you’re the DIY type and you want to be in charge of packing your own home or business, you can still pack like a pro! Our packers and movers are here to share industry secrets that will help make your next move less stressful. One way we make unpacking easier is an organizational system for packing: color coding your boxes, as well as accurate labeling, is a strategy that can make your whole move feel easier.

First, go through your normal processes of organizing, and take the opportunity to downsize, sell, and donate unused items. (After all, the less you have to move, the easier your move could be!) Next, make sure that all of your items are in the appropriate room or space (for instance, have all your books in one room, all your clothing in one room, etc.)

Many packers and movers use a color-coding packing system that works like this:

Assign Each Room a Color

Have either multiple colors of labels or colors of markers to write on the labels that will correspond to each room.

Pack Each Room or Space One at a Time

Every box you pack should be labeled with the correct color and a number. If your master bedroom is blue, and you pack eight boxes of items there, you should have blue boxes numbered one through eight.

Pack Like Items Together

This makes both labeling and unpacking an easier task. Items like silverware will all be packed together and can easily be placed into its new home without having to search for it.

Create a Master List

Creating a master list of all of the boxes and colors lets you know how many boxes belong in each room and which room each box goes into. As our packers and movers bring items into your new space, you’ll know which boxes should be in each room, and how many boxes should be in each room.

If you’re getting ready to make a move, whether it’s across town or across the country, University Moving and Storage can help you get there. Contact us today to get started with your free, no-obligation quote.
