The Most Important Documents Needed for an International Relocation

Moving Abroad: What Documents You Need to Get To Your Destination

Moving internationally can be exciting, but an international relocation involves a lot more responsibility and work. It's not as easy as just moving across town. Knowing all the rules, regulations, and customs laws is essential before making an international move. One of the most important things to do is to have all your paperwork in order. Without the right documents, you won't be able to get into another country. Luckily, our team of movers is familiar with everything you need to get you to your international destination.

Passport

This might seem like an obvious thing to include but getting a passport can be a long process that can take weeks or even months. It's important to start the passport process as soon as possible so that time doesn't work against the you and your family. A passport from the government proves who you are and where you live. For example, when applying for this document, you need proof that you are a US citizen, a valid ID, and an official passport photo.

Birth Certificate

If you don't know where a copy of your birth certificate is, it can take weeks or months to get a new copy of this document. This is a very important document if you want to move abroad because many people use it as proof of citizenship when they apply for a passport or other important official documents.

Visa

A visa is a piece of paper that lets travelers stay in a particular country for a certain amount of time and for a certain kind of visit (tourism, short-term, residency, etc). When your company pays for you to move, your HR will usually help you with visas and immigration.

Work Permit

A work permit lets an employee who is moving to a different country legally work in that country. Companies that help their employees move should include the work permit application process in their policies about moving.

Social Security Card

A social security card is another document that you should already have on hand when you apply for other documents on this list. It should be kept in a safe place while you are living abroad. Like a birth certificate, a Social Security Card is often used to prove who you are when you need to get other official documents.

Pet Vaccination Records

If you're traveling with your pet, get vaccination documents from your vet before you leave. This documentation may be needed for boarding airlines or public transportation to the new destination, crating, or doggy daycare. Some countries mandate rabies tests and a quarantine period. Moving into a condo or apartment may require pet immunization documents as well.

Marriage Certificate

A marriage certificate is an important document that can be used for citizenship and tax purposes. Different countries have different tax laws, so keep the certificate on hand in case you need to show your tax filing status.
